A pediatric dentist is a little bit like a pediatrician for teeth! We specialize in treating children and patients with special needs, so we are more attuned to their unique dental needs thanks to our advanced training and experience. Pediatric dentists receive an additional two to three years of education and training after graduating from dental school.

Children should visit the dentist every six months for a comprehensive oral examination and dental cleaning, just like adults.

Around the age of 12 months, or within six months of the emergence of their first tooth, your child should begin visiting the dentist for regular preventive care. This is our advice, as well as the American Dental Association's and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's recommendation.

For patients who require help relaxing during dental treatments, we provide safe, mild forms of pediatric dental sedation, but we prefer to try to complete dental work without sedation first, if at all possible. If you are concerned about your child's ability to tolerate an upcoming treatment, please let us know ahead of time so we can talk to you about your concerns.

By the age of 7, children should visit an orthodontist for a consultation. Braces are unlikely to be used at this age, but Phase 1 orthodontic therapy, including space maintainers, habit appliances, or palate expanders, may be recommended to influence healthy jaw development and prevent orthodontic issues from forming.
