How often should children brush their teeth?

We recommend that children brush their teeth at least twice a day. Young children will need help from a parent or other caring adult to brush effectively until they learn how to do it on their own.   

How long should children brush? 

A minimum of 2 minutes is recommended. We provide a brush timer video to make it easy for kids to brush their teeth for an effective amount of time. Setting a timer also works, and toothbrushes are available that light up for the necessary amount of time so children know when to stop.

When should children start flossing their teeth? 

Flossing should start as soon as there is more than one tooth in the mouth that is next to another tooth. This typically occurs by the age of 2 or 3. Flossing sticks or plackers are an easy way for young children to floss until they have the fine motor skills to use string floss. 

At what age should my child start going to the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dental Association agree that children should have their first dental exam by the age of 12 months or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting through the gums.
