When should my child have their first dental appointment?

The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that children should see a dentist by their first birthday or within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth. When do children lose their first baby tooth?

The average age for shedding of the first tooth is between the ages of 4 and 7. The first tooth to be shed is usually one of the two bottom front teeth, as these are the first teeth to erupt in infancy. How often should my child go to the dentist?
